Sami Awad, on Auschwitz, fear, and the meaning of nonviolence

So this is two weeks in a row! I'm pretty shocked myself, especially because I'm still living in my summertime dream world, where I keep forgetting about reality. Since I'm not actually in Palestine, I'll just have to stick with analyzing different articles and posting different resources.

I've written about Sami Awad, the director of Holy Land Trust, in previous blogs. I talked about the presentation he gave at the Bethlehem Bible College conference about addressing the Holocaust as a Palestinian. This video is a glimpse of that speech. I really respect Sami. He is one of the only Palestinians I've heard talk about the Holocaust in Israeli society, and not discredit it, but look at it deeply and thoughtfully. Others may think the same, but Sami is beginning to figure out how to put it in words. He told me that it is a new issue for him, and he's not sure what will come out of his experiences yet, but he is learning and asking others to learn, which is an important beginning step.

I hope you will take time to watch this video by clicking below.

He is right in that fear based zero sum pedagogy darkens a future already molested by artificial extremes.

Yet even if it is true that violence lacks creativity, how do you frame an alternative that doesn't begin with a white and western go-nowhere diplomatic therapy session?
